I understand how LiNK helps refugees who have escaped North Korea, but what does that mean for people who are still in North Korea? Does LiNK’s work affect them at all?
Hey Minnah! That’s a fantastic question. LiNK’s vision is Liberty in North Korea, and we work with refugees because we see them as the best agents of change on the issue. Once safely resettled, many North Korean refugees are able to send money and information back to their relatives in North Korea by using broker networks and mobile phones smuggled in from China. Resettled North Koreans send an estimated $10-15 million dollars back home every year. This helps to fuel grassroots marketization, accelerate positive change and opening in North Korean society, and weaken the government’s control over the people.
