Prior to her escape, Nae Rae lived a relatively comfortably life in North Korea. Although she was neither hungry nor faced with hardship, she feared that she would be unable to continue her studies if she remained in her home country. Because of this, she decided to escape.
Nae Rae will soon resettle in South Korea and reunite with her mother. She plans to return to school to study English and Chinese and looks forward to being able to wear what she wants, eat what she craves, and go wherever she desires.
UPDATE: July 2013
Nae Rae reunited with her mother in South Korea and quickly enrolled in English language and other classes so that she can attend university and continue her studies. She’s extremely driven and motivated, studying seven days a week and working with tutors, often choosing not to hang out with friends so that she can study more. She’s able to delay this instant gratification because she knows it’ll be worth it in the near future.
