On May 5, 2014, our LiNK family suffered a tragic loss.
Calvin, Karolina, and Shane from our Heartland Nomad team lost their lives in a fatal car accident in Lubbock, Texas.
The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on the intersection of U.S. 87 and FM 41. According to a local news report, the van collided with a semi-truck carrying ethanol, causing both vehicles to ignite upon impact. The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby medical facility and released the following day.
We are honored to have known these selfless individuals who touched so many lives.

Calvin Voneravong
There has and never will be a Nomad like Calvin. Calvin seemed to understand what made us human and could connect to people in such an authentic way. As soon as you met Calvin, he was your new best friend and you always felt fuller and brighter for having any length of conversation with him. His perspective on the world was incredibly unique and he made lasting impressions on those he shared his thoughts with. Calvin treated his relationships like his art, with empathy and excitement, knowing that this is how he could make a lasting impact on the world. Calvin taught us that every relationship has the potential to be life changing if we take the time and attention to learn from those around us.

Karolina Mora
An eternal portrait of joy and light, Karolina grasped every possible opportunity to live a life full of adventure, passion, and learning. Content in any place, but with constant wanderlust and an inquisitive mind, she explored the Midwest with an open heart and touched thousands across the country, inspiring those she met with the light she left. Adventure wasn’t new to Karolina. After graduating from Cal State Long Beach, she travelled to South Korea, Thailand, all throughout the Americas, and had a passion to share experiences with people around the world. Karolina taught us it is always a good time to smile from ear to ear and to never miss a chance to learn something new that adds meaning and light to our lives.

Shane Wagers
A constant source of encouragement to all of those around him, Shane was the kind of friend everyone wants to have. Without even trying, he always ended up at the center of the most memorable times at the house. His empathetic and understanding personality allowed him to instantly connect and relate to anyone and everyone. Whether through a goofy joke or an inspiring pep talk, Shane was always a voice of support, bringing laughter and light to his family and friends. During his time with us, Shane was uncovering and living out his passion for serving others. Everyday he came into the office and said, “It’s a great day to be working for the North Korean people.” Shane was a constant inspiration and reminder of the honor and privilege it is to work for others.
Calvin, Karolina, and Shane, your memories will always be a constant source of inspiration as we continue the work you so passionately believed in.
To provide immediate financial assistance to the families of these three incredible people, we’ve started the Calvin, Karolina and Shane Memorial Fund.
